Clogged drains are a simple unavoidable truth and at some point you will probably find yourself searching the web to find a good Okc Plumber or when a sink or shower suddenly stops emptying the first instinct may be to call a Plumber Okc to unblock the drain pipe, but the solution to clogged drains is often a quick and fairly painless process that most people can control on their own. If you want to save money on plumbing installation, here are tips for dealing with clogging your sink or emptying a clogged bathtub. With these easy tips, your clogged showers, clogged sinks, or other clogged drains will work like new.
Fixing a clogged drain
Clogged drains are typically the result of a foreign object or debris stuck in a sewer pipe or accumulated debris that makes it impermeable. Sometimes the challenge is how to drain the drain with standing water. If you don’t catch the jam fast enough and the water has backed up, it can make a messy situation.
Drain cleaner. Sink blockages can often be repaired with a sewer cleaner available from your local hardware store. If you think the hair is not too bad, you can also try vinegar and baking soda. If you like a non-chemical approach, try pouring a little vinegar down the drain and following it with baking soda. The combination causes a slight reaction (which looks like carbonation) that can be effective for minimal sink logs.
Plunging. A piston can be a quick solution for attaching clogged sink pipes. This takes some patience and a little practice. There are mini-pistons designed for a clogged bathtub drain, shower or sink that may work better than a standard toilet-sized model.
Snaking. The drain snake is a very simple tool that can be used to remove a blockage. It is a small piece of plastic that can be taken down the drain, and has few “teeth” on the sides to withstand the hair that can form and cause clogging. You can watch video tutorials to see techniques of sewer snaking.
How to remove or unclog the kitchen drain
Sometimes repairing a clogged drain depends on what kind of sink it is. A kitchen sink can pose different challenges than a clogged bathroom sink due to the different configuration and size of the drain.
Grease is often a problem in kitchen sinks because it sticks to food particles and debris, causing clogging. You could be dealing with a double basin or a trap clogged sink. Likewise, if your sink has waste disposal, you need to be careful not to damage the mechanism, and also beware of safety risks. You will probably want to turn off the electricity for waste disposal before attempting to repair clogged drains.
Here are a few experiments with the DIY method before you call an expert to fix a clogged sink problem:
Boiling water. First, remove all the standing water from the sink by using a cup or bucket. Next, pour the entire pot or kettle of boiling water directly into the drain. You may need to repeat this procedure several times for it to work, but it is an easy and inexpensive fix. If this does not help, remove the stagnant water again and then pour the salt down the drain before boiling the water. Let it sit and then rinse again with hot water to clean it.
Vinegar and baking soda. As mentioned above, the reaction caused by these two substances can often remove clogged drains. Remove standing water before adding vinegar. Pour about a cup of baking soda directly into the drain and follow with the same amount of white vinegar. When the volatility ceases, allow the mixture to stand for about 15 minutes and then run hot water to see if the blockage has cleared. The alternative is to combine baking soda with salt and pour into the drain. This should sit for several hours, followed by rinsing with boiling water.
Cleaning of P-traps. The basin drain pipe curve has a P-trap (it is usually in the cabinet under the sink). This may be the source of your blockage; To clog it, open the P-trap from the drain tube, clean it, and then replace it. If the sink is clogged with a trap, you can remove the area past the snake’s P-trap. If you have a pinch and you don’t have a snake, you can also try a straightened wire hanger.
Here’s another tip: If you’re going to use a plunger, cover the drain on the opposite side if you have a double basin. Immersion pressure can cause water or debris to be sprayed into another drain.
Prevent a clogged drain
As they say, prevention is better than the cure, and the same goes for a clogged sewer. Even if you have become a professional in remedying the situation, you would rather not have a blockage.
Be careful in the kitchen when disposing of grease and oil in the sink. Find alternative methods where possible and always use hot water when you are done and never drain even small amounts of grease into the drain.
Keep your disposal clean and always run water when you use it. Use a filter with no disposal, a filter for food and debris that can be placed in the trash.
Clean as much hair as possible in the bathroom drain or add a filter or screen. Clean visible areas of the drain holes frequently when you notice that debris has begun to collect.
